Viewer
The default mode is a SketchUp™ model viewer. Incorporating the intuitive controls of the device, utilize a single finger to orbit around the model, a double finger swipe to pan, and two fingers to pinch zoom in and out. A double tap will reset the view.
-
Augmented Reality
Augmented Reality (AR) superimposes a virtual SketchUp model onto the real world and is only available on the iPad® 2 and later and iPhone® 4 and later. AR works because both the iOS device and SketchUp model are geolocated. To ensure on-site accuracy, check the following:
- The SketchUp file must be geolocated
- On-the-ground location accuracy is increased with a cellular connection - a wifi only connection will have a wider range of error
- If there is no cellular or wifi connection, model can be manually located by tapping, dragging, and further adjusting
-
Augmented Reality Tips
Compass Interference
- From time to time, the compass may need to be recalibrated to compensate for local magenetic fields. When this calibration is needed you will be presented with a request to move the device in a figure '8' motion. Move the device as instructed to calibrate the compass.
- If the model appears to be in the wrong location, use the Maps application to ensure your device has you positioned correctly. You can also try moving the device away from any local magentic sources, pressing the Home key, and tapping on the SightSpace icon. This will re-initialize the augmented reality engine with an updated compass heading.
Model Drift
- Occasionally, the model may appear to drift from its location even though the device is not moving. This can be easily fixed by pressing the Home key and tapping on the SightSpace icon. This will re-initialize the augmented reality engine and re-position the model.

Photos may also be Printed or saved to the Photo Album, also under the Action button.
-
AR button
The AR button turns on Augmented Reality mode and is only available on iPad 2 and later, and iPhone 4 and later. The digital SketchUp model is positioned in physical space and viewed through the device camera.
If you are not located near the model, you are prompted for a location by receiving a top-down view of the active model and tapping a location (pinch-zoom and single-finger pan to move to desired locale).
Touch controls in AR mode:
- Single finger pan to move the model up, down, left, right
- Pinch-zoom to move forward and back
- Double tap to choose a new location
- Note: Double tapping for a location will turn off GPS updates. These controls can be used with both a geolocated and non geolocated model.
Note that the model is displayed at real-world scale because it is geolocated and the device has location information. If geolocation is not available, the model is still displayed.
The action menu in the upper left provides additional options:
- Disable GPS Updates - The iOS device continuosly updates its location information. At times, this can result in a model-shift or drifting. If you like the location of your model and dislike the location updates provided, you can turn off the GPS with this option.
- Stereo 3D (Red/Cyan) - Turn on Red/Cyan Stereoscopic 3D, viewable with a pair of red/cyan 3D glasses. 3D stereoscopic model is superimposed over the live camera feed.
- Stereo 3D Exaggeration slider: choose how much to exaggerate your 3D viewing experience when viewed with red-cyan glasses. Slide towards Maximum to increase model "pop" from the screen.
-

Memory Messages
SightSpace 3D utilizes a custom 3D engine to display the largest, most complex models possible and takes full advantage of the memory on iOS devices. This memory is limited and it is not possible to load every model. In these cases, you will receive a memory message (to prevent a crash). This section will suggest actions you can take to load the largest, most complex models possible.
If you receive a recurrent memory message or an error, try the following:
- Close all other running apps (double tap the Home key, hold App icon until minus appears, and tap the minus to close)
- Optionally, after closing other apps, reboot your device - this gives the maximum amount of RAM for SightSpace 3D to use (press and hold the screen lock button for 5 seconds and follow the instructions to power off the device)
- Lastly, if the above is insufficient, reduce model complexity
Model complexity does not equal simple file size. Factors include geometry, materials, and components.
iOS devices contain two types of memory: Storage Space and RAM. Storage space memory is the GBs that your device has such as 16GB, 32GB, etc. RAM memory is used by all the running apps on the device and is limited. Memory messages you receive from SightSpace 3D will be a result of running out of RAM.
Deleting music, photos, videos, apps, etc from your device will NOT fix the memory message.
-
Settings
Configure various model loading options for tuning performance and memory usage under Settings -> SightSpace. These options include the following:
- Turning lines in models on/off: enables loading of larger models
- Choose to display hidden geometry: this option is best used in conjunction with Google Earth .kmz files
- Performance-Quality slider: choose between better performance and better model quality
- Memory messages on/off: when your device is about to run out of available memory, a memory message will be displayed and SightSpace 3D will close to keep from crashing. Turning off Memory Messages will allow you to load the largest models possible but may also cause app crashes because this protection is now turned off.

Augmented Reality
Augmented Reality (AR) superimposes a virtual model onto the real world via the device camera and is only available on devices with the necessary hardware (phones and tablets with either 1) compass/accelerometer + back-facing camera + geo-location or 2) compass/accelerometer/gyroscope + back-facing camera + geo-location). (*Note: The requirements for AR mean it is not available on Kindle or the Nexus 7).
AR works because both the device and model are geolocated. To ensure on-site accuracy, check the following:
- The .KMZ file must be geolocated
- AR Basic: If your device says "AR (Basic)" in the tab bar, you may experience a slight lag in model updating when moving the device in AR mode. Keep your movements slow and smooth.
- Enable GPS when prompted. SightSpace will choose the most accurate geo-location method for your device to ensure accuracy.
- If there is no cellular or wifi connection, model can be manually located by tapping, dragging, and further adjusting
-
Augmented Reality Tips
- If the model appears to be in the wrong location in Augmented Reality mode, use the Maps application to ensure your device has you positioned correctly.
- Alternatively, move the device away from any local magentic sources, press the Home key, and tap on the SightSpace icon. This will re-initialize the Augmented Reality engine.
- Lastly, recalibrate SightSpace by selecting Menu -> Settings -> Calibrate augmented reality. The device will undergo a 7 second calibration. Device calibration can be reset by selecting Menu -> Settings -> Calibrate augmented reality -> Reset Calibration pressing the Home key, and tapping on the SightSpace icon. This will re-initialize the augmented reality engine with an updated compass heading.
